Melaka

The Birthplace of Malaysia's Islam

Melaka is where Islam took root in Malaysia. Parameswara, the founder of Malacca, converted to Islam in 1414, and the Malacca Sultanate became the first Islamic kingdom in the Malay Peninsula. The Kampung Kling Mosque (built 1748) and the Kampung Hulu Mosque (1728) are among the oldest in the country, blending Malay, Chinese, and Indian architectural influences.

Cultural Notes for Muslim Travelers

1

Melaka's Islam is deeply intertwined with its multicultural history — you'll see Chinese-Muslim, Indian-Muslim, and Malay-Muslim communities living side by side.

2

The call to prayer echoes beautifully across the river at dusk. Walk along the Melaka River during Maghrib for a spiritual experience.

3

Jonker Street Night Market has many halal stalls, but some sell non-halal items. Look for the green JAKIM logo or ask 'Ini halal ke?'

4

The Melaka Sultanate Palace Museum is a must-visit for understanding how Islam shaped Malay governance and culture.

5

Peranakan (Baba Nyonya) culture is unique to Melaka. Kocik Kitchen offers halal-certified Nyonya food — a rare find.
